GRE Tips & Tricks

December 19, 2010

Mugging up the 3,500 long word list can be a big pain especially when we come across words which would not seem relevant to our domain. Professionally I am a Senior Software Engineer and when I come across words like “Scuttle” which means “Sink”, I wonder who would actually say “My ship ‘scuttled’ “! or may be “We just ‘scuttled’ the enemy ship!” I wouldn’t go through the pain of actually mugging up such a word and then present it to a person who would only be seeing stars unless if he is some verbal scholar! I was trying to find out some solution to this. Click Here

Germany vs England World Cup 2010

June 28, 2010

Well… What can I say! Thank You Fabio Capello! You seem to have made the English defence look like a mere sheet instead of a wall. Just look at the way Klose powers his way through Upson! Whose side is Glen Johnson on? All he wants to do is attack and no defence?  Why was a player like Dawson overlooked when he had a brilliant season with Tottenham?!? And where was the ever so dependable John Terry??? The defence was a total failure!!! But one of the most shocking decisions did take place and that was disallowing Lampard’s clear goal? What was the referee doing? Looking at some female fan behind the goal! He must have snapped out of it when the German Keeper held the ball!!! Absolutely pathetic! FIFA refereeing standards are worse than the English Premier League’s!!! Where do they get these guys from? Ask me to be an assistant referree and I would be like a Maradona of Assistant Referees! I am sure atleast England’s attacking front would have done better had that goal been given! And Gareth Barry?!? Come on now! There is no point carrying an injury and jogging like a 60 year old! Come on if you want to show your Lion’s Heart you have to play like one too! Capello, there is only one person to blame and that is YOU!!! It never seemed like you had a plan for a highly attacking team! You should have done your homework!!! Guys what do you think! Comments appreciated!

Retrieving Unique Values from a DataTable in .NET

March 25, 2009

The easiest way to return a new table that has only the unique values from the original table is as follows:

DataTable distinctTable = originalTable.DefaultView.ToTable(true, “FieldName”);
Thus “distinctTable” will contain unique values!!! :) Have fun!

Using Variables in T-SQL Statements that accept only constant values

December 31, 2008

Developers usually come across a situation wherein they would want to use a variable in a T-SQL Statement which accepts only constant values.

For example, if we try to assign a variable to a Select Top <@variable_name> statement, we would get an error like:

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
Incorrect syntax near ‘@variable_name’

There is a work around this problem though. The below stored procedure  solves it:

CREATE PROCEDURE TEST
@TestInt INT

AS

BEGIN

DECLARE @SqlQuery NVARCHAR(4000);

SET @SqlQuery = ‘SELECT TOP ‘+CAST(@TestInt as CHAR)+’* FROM TABLE_TEST’;

EXEC(@SqlQuery)

END

Formatting DateTime in SQL Server

October 23, 2008

As a Developer, you would come across a scenario where you would want SQL Server to return DateTime in a particular format to the front end. You can use SQL Server’s built in function GETDATE() to return the current DateTime. But if you need a universal date/time, use the built-in function GETUTCDATE(). SQL Server provides format numbers to format the date/time string returned. All you need to do is convert the specific date to a string and specify the format number corresponding to your required format.

Below is a list of  few Date formats and their corresponding outputs:

Date Formats
Format No. SQL Query Output
1 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 1) 12/30/06
2 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 2) 06.12.30
3 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 3) 30/12/06
4 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 4) 30.12.06
5 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 5) 30-12-06
6 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 6) 30 Dec 06
7 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 7) Dec 30, 06
10 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 10) 12-30-06
11 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 11) 06/12/30
101 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 101) 12/30/2006
102 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 102) 2006.12.30
103 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 103) 30/12/2006
104 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 104) 30.12.2006
105 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 105) 30-12-2006
106 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 106) 30 Dec 2006
107 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 107) Dec 30, 2006
110 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 110) 12-30-2006
111 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 111) 2006/12/30

Below is a list of few Time formats and their corresponding outputs:

Time Formats
Format No. SQL Query Output
8 or 108 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 8 ) 00:38:54
9 or 109 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 9) Dec 30 2006 12:38:54:840AM
14 or 114 select convert(varchar, getdate(), 14) 00:38:54:840
